Introduce the visual cue
Decide what visual cue you want to use for drop. The cue I use is an open hand palm up under the dogs chin. You may choose something different; it does not matter, providing your visual cue is consistent. Give your visual cue at the same time as your ‘drop’ command. When you have achieved a few successful repeats, try the visual cue only. Keep your visual cue in position and give your dog time to think about what she/he has learned, mark and reward if successful.
If you are not achieving the desired results, go back to using the verbal command ‘drop’ in conjunction with the visual cue for a few repeats.
